Catastrophic winds from Hurricane Melissa have started to move onshore in Jamaica, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Tuesday morning, with the storm expected to soon make landfall.

Hurricane Melissa was grinding across Cuba on Wednesday as a Category 2 storm after pummeling Jamaica as one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes on record, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

The researchers also estimate that current climate change likely increased Melissa’s peak wind speeds by around 19 kph.
